Internet vs World Wide Web

The internet is “an electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world.” It originally started as an academic research project in 1969, and then went on to become a global commercial network later in the 1990’s. In 1969 Bob Taylor, an ARPA Administrator created an academic research network which is what the internet began as. Then, in 1973, software engineers Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn created the next generation of networking standards, which eventually became the foundation of the internet that we know today. The internet is the world’s most popular computer network.

The World Wide Web is “an information system where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators, which may be interlinked by hypertext, and are accessible over the Internet.” It is a popular way to publish information on the internet. The web was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. The three fundamental technologies that remain the foundation of the web that we still have today had been written by Tim as of October of 1990. They are the HTML the URI and the HTTP.

The web is just one of the internets many applications. The web can only be accessed through the internet, so you could day that they work together. They are often confused to be the same thing, but ultimately the web is just one of the many services that uses the internet. The first web page was created by Tim Berners-Lee and it went live on August 6, 1991. The website explained how to create web pages and use hypertext. The website is still up today, and can be found at http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html.
